GPAC ACTION HEATING UP

Sep. 30, 2019

If Grande Peace Athletic Club’s Zac Shantz had his chest pumped out a little more than usual at school on Monday he had good reason.

The Golden Arrow Bantam AAA Storm forward had five points on Sunday in a 10-1 win over the visiting Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League play at home.

Shantz scored four times and added an assist as the GA team rolled to one of its most lopsided victories in the past several seasons.

Carter Hensch wasn’t too shabby either for the GP team with two goals and two helpers while Jaxon Young, Spencer Brazal, Reis Nyland and Patrick Green all chipped in with singles.

Nathan Crawley was in net for the Storm making 31 saves.

Saturday Vaughn Kaliel was tending the pipes in a 2-2 tie with the Rangers. Wes Golden and Steel Burke netted the goals in that game.

The Storm now sit in third in the Charger North division of the league after a win, two ties and a loss to start the season.

Jayden Gordey was no doubt also bursting with pride after the weekend. He had four goals helping the Peaceland Directional Drilling Storm to a 5-4 win over the Sturgeon Sting on Sunday in Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League play at the Sportsplex in Clairmont.

Alden Brown also had a goal while Owen Taylor made 41 saves in net for the Storm.

On Friday the PDD team fell 6-4 on the road to the Peace River Royals. Colton Burke, Benjamin Schmidt, Tyler Buchberger and Liam Morrow had the GP goals in that game while Tyler Burwash made 59 saves in the GP net.

The Boston Pizza Storm had a couple of Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League games on the road on the weekend.

On Saturday Tyson Buchan, Brody West and Carter Kreller scored in a 3-3 tie with the St. Albert Flyers with Conner Stojan making 45 saves for GP while on Sunday West had the lone goal and Tye Georgeson made 33 saves for GP in a 9-1 loss to the Sherwood Park Squires.

The Dreger Racing Team Storm got two goals from Brayden Bissel and a single off the stick of Hunter White, and 58 saves from Karson Bradford in a 4-3 at home to the Beaumont Braves in Edmonton Rural Alberta Bantam AA Hockey League action.

On Friday the Peace River Sabres blanked the DRT team 4-0.

The Higson Dental Storm play in the same league, but with better luck.

On Saturday they doubled the Whitecourt Wolverines 4-2. Bowen Grycan had two goals and Nathan Sanregret and Brady Parsons singles in that game while Logan Swatzky kicked out 29 shots.

Two GPAC teams have yet to open their regular season.

The Ernie’s Sports Experts Storm of the Alberta Midget Hockey League visit the Red Deer Chiefs on Saturday and the Leduc Oil Kings on Sunday looking to improve on a season that saw them finish third in the Dodge Division last year and making it to the division semifinals.

The newest GPAC team, the Access Dental Storm of the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League open on the road too - on Oct. 12 against the Central Panthers and Oct. 13 in Red Deer.
