The Grande Peace Athletic Club Boston Pizza Storm accomplished a couple of huge things on Sunday; the GPAC Peaceland Directional Drilling Storm had themselves an impressive weekend; the season is over for the GPAC Ernie's Sports Experts Storm; and the Peaceland Directional Drilling Storm finished up their regular season and get ready for the playoffs.
A 5-3 win over the PAC Saints in their final Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League regular season game Sunday allowed the Boston Pizza team to advance to the North Division quarterfinals.
And the victory no doubt gives the Travis Wallan-coached club some confidence going into that best-of-three opening series because they will be taking on that same PAC team in the first round.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first and battling to a 2-2 draw after two the Storm scored three times in the final frame to secure their biggest win of the season Sunday.
Jayden Gordey scored twice and Ethan Boucher, Mason Kyllo and Colton Burke - with just 26 seconds remaining into an empty net - sealed the deal for BP. Terris Lappenbush made 44 saves in the GP net.
BP ended the regular season with 25 points on nine wins, 18 losses and seven ties - one up on ninth place Edmonton CAC. PAC finished first with 57 points.
In the other quarterfinal series the Sherwood Park Squires take on Edmonton SSAC; the Leduc Oil Kings and Fort Saskatchewan Rangers tangle; and the St. Albert Flyers and Lloydminster Bobcats tangle.
The GPAC Dreger Racing Team were flawless in four games starting last Thursday.
They went through the Edmonton Rural Bantam Hockey League Black Division playoff tournament in Fort McMurray undefeated wrapping it up with a 6-0 win over the Fort McMurray Barons in the final on Sunday.
DRT will now take on the White Division winner, the Lakeland Panthers following their finale 8-2 win over the Lloydminster Blazers, with the winner of that series taking on the Blue-Red Division winner.
Diezel Leet led the offensive charge in the final against the Barons on Sunday with three goals and an assist. Trey Stephenson had a goal and three helpers while Ryan St. Germaine and Carter Kreller also scored. Ethan Barron got the shutout making 29 saves.
GPAC's other ERBHL team, Hitch 'Em Oilfield Storm, were winless in three games in the playoff tournament and their season is over.
And the season has ended for the Ernie's Sports Experts club.
They fell 4-1 to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in Fort Saskatchewan on Sunday and lost a best-of-five Alberta Midget Hockey League semi-final 3-0.
The Peaceland Directional Drilling Storm are also in the playoffs. They take part in a regional tournament in Whitecourt next weekend.
They finished off their regular season losing 4-1 to the Whitecourt Wolverines in Whitecourt on Sunday. Isaac Wagner had the lone GP goal and Rylan Labrie made 29 saves in that game.
