Rowney Living The Dream In NHL

May. 08, 2017

From Sexsmith Alberta all the way to round two of the Stanley cup playoffs, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Carter Rowney, who played bantam and midget in the Grande Peace Athletic Club system and also with the Junior A Storm, is living his dream of playing in the NHL.

Rowney played 27 games in the regular season.  He scored three goals and had four assists.  He scored his first NHL goal March 27, 2017 against New Jersey.

“There’s nothing like your first goal or your first point, or even your first game, said Rowney. “Being able to score that first goal took longer than I had wanted. And I think that’s just something you work towards and you get some chances and I was finally able to capitalize, and to be able to score that one at home was pretty cool.  That was a great feeling and a night I’ll never forget.”

Now in the second round of the playoffs, the Penguins can book their ticket to the Eastern Conference final tonight with a win over the Washington Capitals.

“When I got to play my first playoff game it was unbelievable, it was an experience I’ll never forget. The emotion and energy that runs in the building whether you’re at home or on the road, I mean there’s nothing like it, it’s playoff hockey and you dream of it as a kid.”

Rowney says he receives a lot of encouraging texts from friends and family that they are back home cheering for him.  He joked some of his friends might still be cheering for the Oilers

He has played six games in the playoffs, with no goals, no assists and four penalty minutes.

There’s still a lot of hockey left to play and when we asked him if they win the cup, what he would do with it the day he has it, he said right now he’s just focused on beating the Capitals.

The Penguins lead the series 3-2. The winner advances to the East final, to play either Ottawa or the New York Rangers.
